Program Description
As an Educational Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping all students achieve their academic potential by assisting professional educators. The Educational Assistant Certificate Program prepares you to work in a variety of settings from head start programs to high school levels, from resource room settings to fully inclusive settings. Educational Assistants require an understanding of human development and exceptionalities, and strategies to support math and language arts instruction for both children and adults.

Courtney was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Regina where she completed her Education Degree with a focus on Early Childhood Education. Her involvement in education over the past five years has included teaching both elementary and high school, working as a Special Education and Early Childhood Consultant.  She enjoys working with her eStudents and helping them provide the best possible learning environments for the students they work with.

Program Overview
Credenda Virtual College is offering the Educational Assistant Certificate Program via the internet with live interactive lessons so you can stay in your community. The certificate program is comprised of 11 courses and 2 practicums, with each course approximately 8 weeks long. The classes will take place one evening a week and one Saturday a month allowing you to retain employment during the day and still work towards your education goals.

You will need a computer with high speed internet and a headset with microphone.

Prerequisites before enrolling

  1. A criminal record check is required and is requested through the RCMP. Based on the information received, you may be denied entrance into the program. You must contact the RCMP detachment in your home town. The cost of a criminal record check varies among detachments.
  2. A Child Intervention Record System (CIRS) check is also required. This can be done at any Children's Services office. You should consult your provincial government services for the nearest available detachment.

Designed to develop interpersonal communication skills individually and in group situations as needed human services. Examines self-esteem and interpersonal relationship resolution skills needed for working with individuals and groups, families and colleagues.

Focuses on the development of effective writing and critical reading skills. Includes essay, story or letter writing, as well as analytical reading.

Provides you with an understanding of the developing child from birth to five years. Traces the changes that occur physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually during this period.

HS 214 Human Development 2
Understand the changes--physical, cognitive, social and personality-that take place from middle childhood through adulthood. Examine theoretical perspectives of human development through a comparison of various assumptions and principles about growth and behaviour. Prerequisite: HS 114.

Focuses on developing skills and attitudes necessary for a teacher assistant to work as an effective and professional team member in a school setting. Discussion roles and responsibilities, conflict resolution and legal and ethical issues.

Provides an introduction to children with exceptionalities by examining the categories and characteristics of diversity. Explore issues pertinent to children and youth with exceptionalities and their families.

HS 155 Positive Behavior Supports 3
Includes an examination of attitudes, values and skills within a holistic approach to positive behaviour supports. Practical strategies address behaviour problems, increase appropriate behaviours and decrease inappropriate behaviours. Discuss the significance of maintaining a physically and psychologically safe environment for children, youth, adults and care providers.
