Program Description
What a child learns during the first years of life will last a lifetime. If you are dedicated to providing opportunities for children to discover, explore, create, and learn through play, then this is the program for you. The basis of the Early Learning and Child Care Certificate Program is that learning through play is central to the healthy development of young children. At the same time, you will learn the values and culture of a child's local community and how they affect child care.

The program gives a comprehensive introduction to child growth, behaviour and development, as well as how to plan, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate experiences in a stimulating environment which provides for the health, safety, and nutrition of children. The Early Learning and Child Care Certificate Program will strengthen your understanding and skills, thereby enhancing the quality of service received by children. The program offers you the knowledge, experience, perspective, and skill set for an enjoyable, successful career working with young children.

Kasey Fulton grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and is presently an eInstructor for Credenda’s Early Learning and Child Care programs. She attended the University of Manitoba where she completed her Human Ecology Degree with a focus on Family Studies and Child Development. During the past several years she has worked within the field of Early Childhood in various capacities' including: ABA Behaviour Therapy and Autism, Intervention, and Daycare & Head Start.

eInstructor Ashley Duiker was born in the Northwest Territories but lived most of her life in a small village in Northern Saskatchewan. She now lives in Lethbridge Alberta with her husband. It is here, at the University of Lethbridge that she completed her Degree in English. Her career path has always had a focus on working with children and has had a number of years of experience through Daycare, Volunteer work, and Elementary Classrooms.

Program Overview
Credenda Virtual College is offering the Early Learning and Child Care Certificate Program via the internet with live interactive lessons so you can stay in your community. The certificate program is comprised of 10 courses and 2 practicums, with each course approximately 8 weeks long. The classes will take place one evening a week allowing you to retain employment during the day and still work towards your education goals. Program length is about 2 years.

Employment opportunities exist for graduates of the Early Learning and Child Care Certificate Program in areas such as daycare, nursery programs, Head Start and positions within the Education System.

You will need a computer with high speed internet and a headset with microphone.

Prerequisites before enrolling

  1. A criminal record check is required and is requested through the RCMP. Based on the information received, you may be denied entrance into the program. You must contact the RCMP detachment in your home town. The cost of a criminal record check varies among detachments.
  2. A Child Intervention Record System (CIRS) check is also required. This can be done at any Children's Services office. You should consult your provincial government services for the nearest available detachment.

This course is an overview of the significance of play in the development of the child. It includes nature and the development of play in children, organizing meaningful play experiences, designing play oriented activity centers and the development of outdoor play spaces.

Focuses on the development of effective writing and critical reading skills. Includes essay, story or letter writing, as well as analytical reading.

Provides you with an understanding of the developing child from birth to five years. Traces the changes that occur physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually during this period.

HS 214 Human Development 2
This course assists you in understanding the changes-physical, social, emotional and intellectual-that take place as the five through twelve year old child grows and develops. Theoretical perspectives of child development are examined, providing a comparison of various assumptions and principles about children's growth and behaviour.

HS 180 Curriculum Planning 1
This course is an exploration of curriculum planning, implementation an evaluation in the areas of art, games, movement and music. These curriculum arrears are explored within the framework of a play orientated, interactions approach. This approach enables you to design and implement interactive activities for children and youth. You are provided the opportunity to acquire strategies for supporting the development of children and youth within the preschool, school community setting.

This course explores values, attitudes, ethics, and commitment involved in working professionally with young children and families. HS 155 Positive Behaviour Supports
The course includes and examination of attitudes, values, and skills that support positive guidance techniques in a child care or classroom setting. Practical strategies that prevent behaviour problems, increase appropriate behaviours, and decrease inappropriate behaviour while maintaining a physically and psychologically safe environment for children and those who care for them is the focus of this course.
