Library and Information Technology Diploma Program with Red River College

Program Overview
Our Library Training Diploma Program is the next step after you have earned your Library Training Certificate. Like all our college programs, it is delivered online with live interactive lessons so you can stay in your community. The classes will take place one evening a week, allowing you to retain employment during the day and still work towards your education goals.
The diploma program is comprised of 17 courses, including three practicums which may require a weekend off-site library visit each. (Students may meet these requirements through prior work experience). Program length is 3 years with 5-6 courses being offered each year.
Program Description
This Red River College progam provides you with the necessary public service and technical skills to be a productive employee in the library and related fields. Specifically, the program provides you with the training to be employed as a library technician. You will learn the fundamentals of both manual and automated systems for acquiring, organizing, and disseminating information in a variety of formats.

Your eInstructor Linda Aksomitis Linda is an award winning, internationally published author. Her textbook, Guide To Becoming A Library Technician, was published by ICDC Publishing in California. She also has twenty other book publications, including nonfiction and fiction for audiences from pre-school to adult. In addition to books, she writes for travel magazines and is the managing editor/webmaster for two Web sites: http://snowridermag.com and http://guide2travel.ca. |

| Linda completed a Master of Vocational/Technical Education in 2007 at the U of R in Regina. Her undergrad degree major was in English, with an Education focus as a teacher-librarian. In addition, she has library training from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, SAIT Technical Institute in Alberta and Red River College in Manitoba. She worked in school libraries for eleven years, so is able to share her on-the-job experiences with students in her classroom. | ||

COMM-2074 Career Writing
Continue to master written and oral skills required in a library setting. Learn to write abstracts and to conduct effective meetings and take minutes. Also learn to prepare resumes, letters of application and proper job interview skills.

COMP-1975 Business Computing
A hands-on course in which students develop skills in the use of current Microsoft productivity software. Topics include introductory and intermediate skills in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as the integration of these applications.

LIBR-1035 Non-Print Equipment & Services
Students learn to operate and perform basic maintenance of audio-visual and office equipment including equipment required for new electronic media. Students are exposed to safety and security issues and to criteria for selection and purchase of equipment. The course also introduces students to types of major non-print formats and their storage, handling, preservation, circulation and scheduling.

LIBR-2006 Canadian Government & Contemporary Canadian Issues
This course is selective study of Canadian politics with emphasis on multiple viewpoints pertaining to federal as well as provincial and municipal politics. The implications on policy formation and political behaviour of such factors as culture, regional diversity, the economy, labour, business and Canada's close ties with the USA are examined.

You will be introduced to works by Canadian writers, and learn to develop basic skills in writing about literature and doing research in literary areas. You will look at a variety of works and examine terms and concepts such as imagery, irony, point of view, and genre.

Learn how to evaluate a records management system, control the creation of records, analyze forms and undertake a records inventory. Evaluate storage and retrieval procedures, establish records retention schedules and find out how to transfer records. Includes archival principles.

MGMT-1023 Human Behaviour in Organizations
This course is concerned with the study of individual and group behaviour in organized and purposeful group settings. The focus of the course will be to develop an understanding of the needs and behaviour of people in groups, and to develop skills in dealing with people in these group settings.

OFCM-3000 Electronic Publishing for Business
This course will cover various topics in electronic publishing including web design, brochures, and newsletters. Students will learn design theory and be able to make contributions to the design or design recommendations for business publications according to business and customer needs. Students will develop competence with html coding, desktop publishing software, and web creation software while designing, creating, and enhancing the format of various publications.
