19-May-2010 "I wish I knew how this computer really works". How many times have you said that? In this month's assembly, Tom Tjelum of ESICanada Solutions in Edmonton gave our Credenda students an inside look at what it takes to become a Computer Programmer in this very demanding and "hot" career. Think you have the "stuff" to be a Programmer? Listen in to what Tom says and learn from the expert.

21-Apr-2010 What would we do without hairstylists? A trim, a cut, some colouring, new highlights, a funky style—whatever the “do,” and whatever the occasion, the hairstylist always comes to the rescue. We heard from Quyen Lu, a certified hairstylist. This is a highly competitive industry that can lead to some very awesome opportunities. Quyen has been a hairstylist for many years and has styled many heads. Quyen helped us understand what it takes to get the certification in hairstyling that can lead to solid job prospects.

Bad Hair Day

Unfortunately, Elluminate had a very bad hair day!
Thanks again to Quyen Lu and everyone who attend for their perseverance.

24-Mar-2010 Credenda's featured career speaker for March was Clayton Robb. Clayton is an experienced Federal Corrections Officer with the Edmonton Institution. He brings many years of experience and advise for those interested in a career in the Corrections system. Prisoner management takes patience and skill in negotiations and control. Clayton helped us understand the "little-known" world of the Corrections Officer. Interested in this path for your career? Then you won't want to miss listening to Clayton in this presentation.

24-Feb-2010 NURSES - One of the "HOTTEST" careers out there..... For the Credenda Student Assembly in February, we welcomed Abigal (Abby) Adedire. Abby, as she is affectionately known, is a Registered Nurse working in Obstetrics at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. As we all know, Obstetrics is that part of the hospital that works with those cute little new borns...how cool is that? Abby took her 4 year nursing degree at the University of Alberta, taking all of that training in French. Abby loves her job as a Registered Nurse and has some great tips on entering into this rewarding career."
We also celebrated our hugely successful Haiti relief effort. Check it out at our eCharity page. eStudents and eStaff donations at $1815 x 2 Credenda match = $3630 x 2 Canada match = $7270!

20-Jan-2010 This month's career guest speaker, Grace Fox, is an award-winning Canadian author of four non-fiction books and hundreds of magazine articles. Her material comes from her own real-life experiences – both good and bad – and from interviewing other people about theirs. She says her most challenging assignment (so far) was writing a Reader’s Digest “Drama in Real Life” story about a tragic fishing boat accident. Grace’s writing journey has opened opportunities for her to speak to groups across Canada and in countries including India, Poland, Hungary, and Romania. She’s also a trusted guest on national radio and television. In her spare time, she enjoys riding motorbike!
We also launched a Credenda initiative to gather donations for Haiti. Visit our charity page at Social Network's Charity Home for more information on how you can quadruple your donation.

25-Nov-2009 Before Lawyer Tim Patterson discussed his career with Edmonton Community Legal Centre Kristina Rabyj and Sally Meadows of the University of Saskatchewan presented the myWISEmentor Program (http://www.mywisementor.com/). This program is designed to support interest in careers in engineering and sciences for girls. It uses email to connects individuals between 11 and 18 with a career interest to a mentor in that career. Tim Patterson explained that although TV over-dramatizes court room scenes, it has its exciting moments and is a very rewarding career. He mentioned one eureka moment when he spotted a discrepancy in dates that gave him a sweet victory.

21-Oct-2009 Our career focus of engineering was expertly addressed by Nathaniel Papay. He walked us through the design process and assured us that yes, what you do learn in school, like Ohm's law, does have real life applications. He also discussed that whether or not you are an engineer, people skills are invaluable for success in the workplace. Nathaniel also mentioned that he volunteered his technical and engineering skills in the summer of 2009 for a community radio station in Africa.

16-Sep-2009 The first assembly of our 2009-10 school year was a great start. Director Vince Hill introduced our new staff, including Steve Winkler, our guidance counselor. Our career poll indicated an interest in human resources so Steve did an "edutainment" (educational and entertaining) presentation based on his many years as an HR Manager.
